Tuesday 23 April was , an initiative created by  that tackles life’s big challenges through the proven power of reading. To mark the occasion, ÷ÈÓ°ÊÓƵ learners and staff gathered for a series of special events in the newly refurbished library. It was a great turn out of more than 250 attendees in total who all came together to celebrate everything they love about books and reading.

Learners from Entry 3 Functional Skills to GCSE English courses read poems, extracts from well- known books and their own compositions. The learners were joined by ÷ÈÓ°ÊÓƵ Principal, Deputy Principal, Directors, Curriculum Managers and tutors who shared their reading experiences and commented on the readings.

Among the array of topics included in the programme were: the struggle for independence in Albania and India, the fight of two men to survive a deadly expedition in the Peruvian Andes and the voice of a mother, appealing for her children’s freedom to express their religion. Some learners expressed their views on living in London and their efforts to integrate when they first arrived in the UK. There were also touching poems, book extracts and compositions shared about open and closed doors and opportunities, the deforestation of the Amazon and the resilience to endure war and death through the power of education, faith and hope.

A learner commented: ‘Reading in public has been the most difficult but most rewarding thing I have ever done in my English course’

Attendees were treated to drinks and even some special homemade ‘book cupcakes’ after the readings.
